A Greater Somerset County YMCA Board of Director member is a fiduciary for the organization. A fiduciary is an individual, corporation or association having duty to act for another’s benefit in a specific area of responsibility. As such, each board member is responsible for using his or her best judgment in conducting the affairs of the Y. This includes attending meetings, being well-informed of policy matters, and assuring that the Y is fiscally well managed. Should the Y face fiscal or other managerial challenges, the board is legally responsible.

We are currently looking for volunteers to serve as judges for this year’s Bart’s Challenge, which will take place on Saturday, October 3rd, 2026, at 9:00 AM. The Bart’s Challenge is designed to inspire and motivate individuals to set and achieve their own fitness goals while celebrating healthy living as a community. We encourage everyone to get involved and be part of this exciting event. The YMCA’s annual Bart Talloen Challenge features six timed exercises: Planks; Mountain Climbers; Sit-Ups; Regular Push-Ups; Decline Push-Ups; Chin-Ups. Participants compete in individual, pairs, and teams of four divisions. Judge training will be provided, so no prior experience is necessary. Memory Cafe is a monthly gathering designed for individuals experiencing Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), dementia, or other memory challenges. Attendees can come with their caregivers, family, or friends. It offers a safe, supportive environment. Memory Cafe meets once a month creating a positive, welcoming experience for everyone involved. No formal assessment or referral is needed - simply come, connect, and enjoy! The volunteers will help with set up and break down of the event, help with crafts, gaming, special guests, converse and connect with the participants and their caregivers. The program meets the third Thursday of every month from 10:00-11:30am. Saturdays in Motion (SIM) is the longest running recreational program for children with autism in the United States. Autistic children and their families join together at Somerset Hills YMCA two Saturdays each month for two hours of recreation (from 3 – 5 p.m.). Volunteers lead the program, and carefully guide the children through an hour of gym time and a second hour in the pool. Siblings are welcome. This program is free to the community and runs from the fall to the spring. Seeking teenage volunteers to be paired one-on-one to play with the kids while parents enjoy caregiving respite.

Dance Assistant Volunteers support instructors and coaches during dance classes, rehearsals, performances, and dance team activities. Responsibilities include helping with studio setup and cleanup, assisting dancers with counts, formations, and choreography when directed, and promoting a positive, respectful learning environment. This opportunity is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with children and are passionate about water safety, skill development, and youth engagement. Swim Lesson Class Assistants help create a positive and encouraging learning environment where participants can build confidence in the water, develop essential swimming skills, and work toward personal goals. Through this role, volunteers contribute to a safe, supportive, and fun experience that promotes lifelong water safety and healthy activity. Volunteers are asked to commit to an 8-week session for lesson consistency both for instructors and swimmers. Note: all registrants must complete the attached project application to gauge swim ability as this role will be in the pool with the class participants.
