Greater Somerset County YMCA

A Greater Somerset County YMCA Board of Director member is a fiduciary for the organization. A fiduciary is an individual, corporation or association having duty to act for another’s benefit in a specific area of responsibility. As such, each board member is responsible for using his or her best judgment in conducting the affairs of the Y. This includes attending meetings, being well-informed of policy matters, and assuring that the Y is fiscally well managed. Should the Y face fiscal or other managerial challenges, the board is legally responsible.

Tutoring and homework help are provided in either a one-on-one or small group setting. The Cultural Engagement Committee is responsible for assisting the Branch Board in advancing diversity and inclusion to ensure all segments of the community have access to and feel welcome at the Y. The committee develops programs and initiatives that drive awareness of and celebrates the diverse fabric of the community served by the Y. Some initiatives have included: organizing the annual MLK Day of Service project, planning activities of engagement with Hispanic Heritage Month, planning and participating in Courageous Conversations that creates a safe space for community to hold discussions, honoring and celebrating Diwali, Holi, Chinese New Year and more. An engaged volunteer will be available for a monthly committee meeting, planning and attending events, helping to convene community and championing the Y.

The Financial Assistance Committee at Somerset Hills YMCA is dedicated to ensuring financial accessibility and promoting financial literacy within our community. As a vital component of the Y's mission, the committee convenes regularly (monthly) to fulfill its responsibilities outlined below. Empowered by the Branch Board, the committee operates transparently and with a commitment to inclusivity and impact. Key Responsibilities: 1. Promoting Financial Literacy Workshops: Coordinate engaging workshops and seminars aimed at enhancing financial literacy within the community. These workshops will cover topics such as budgeting, saving, investing, and responsible borrowing, empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary for financial success. Workshops can be led by committee members or coordinated in partnership with outside partners. 2. Community Outreach and Resource Promotion: Actively engage with diverse segments of the community to promote the availability of financial assistance resources offered by the YMCA. Collaborate with local organizations, schools, and community groups to ensure that individuals in need are aware of and have access to the assistance they require. 3. Inclusive Representation: Serve as ambassadors of the YMCA to the community, fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all individuals without judgment or discrimination. Strive to understand and address the unique needs of diverse populations, ensuring that everyone feels valued and supported in their journey towards financial wellness. 4. Impact Storytelling: Share stories of impact and transformation resulting from the YMCA's financial assistance program. Highlight the experiences of individuals who have benefited from the program, demonstrating its tangible impact on their lives and the broader community. These stories will serve to inspire and motivate others while fostering a culture of philanthropy and support for the Y's mission. 5. Understand Approved Applications: In tandem with Y Staff, understand the financial assistance applications approved to be able to report on the impact of the program to others. Provide regular updates to the Branch Board of how much assistance has been provided year-to-date. Through these efforts, the Financial Assistance Committee plays a crucial role in advancing the YMCA's mission of strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. By promoting financial literacy, expanding access to resources, fostering inclusivity, and sharing impactful stories, the committee contributes to the financial development and overall well-being of individuals and families within our community.

The focus of the committee revolves around selecting, promoting and leading fun and rewarding, community based service projects for members of the Y and community to participate in. The Togetherhood Committee is a standing committee of the Branch Board that meets at least six times per year to perform its duties outlined below. It receives its authority from the Branch Board and its actions are subject to review and approval by the Branch Board. The committee has the authority to establish ad hoc groups from time to time as may be necessary to carry out its work. Current Togetherhood initiatives: Veterans support, support provided to seniors with Alzheimers/Dementia and their caretakers.

Memory Cafe is a volunteer led program for anyone with early onset Dementia or Alzheimer to connect with others who are going through similar experiences. The volunteers will help with set up and break down of the event, help with crafts, gaming, special guest, converse and connect with the participants and their caregiver. The program meets the last Wednesday of every month. Saturdays in Motion (SIM) is the longest running recreational program for children with autism in the United States. Autistic children and their families join together at Somerset Hills YMCA on Saturdays for two hours of recreation (from 3 – 5 p.m.). Volunteers lead the program, and carefully guide the children through an hour of gym time and a second hour in the pool. Siblings are welcome. This program is free to the community and runs from the fall to the spring. Seeking teenage volunteers to be paired one-on-one to play with the kids while parents enjoy caregiving respite.

As a Little Free Pantry Community Champion you will work with your neighborhood, community, family and friends to collect non-perishable food donations.
